In a world run by memory-implanted AIs, an old scavenger and his malfunctioning robotic dog stumble across a forbidden dream-chip—one that might awaken lost humanity, or doom the last city.
The dog was dying again. Its optics flickered in stuttering loops, caught between infrared and a static-drenched approximation of night vision. Sparks spat from the exposed wiring at its hind leg, and its breath—a synthetic wheeze mimicking the real thing—rattled like a cassette caught in rewind. The scavenger crouched beside it, one gloved hand steadying the dog’s rusted chassis as the other reached into the tattered tool pouch hanging from his belt.
